Accounting Major

The accounting major prepares students for careers in public or corporate accounting. The curriculum also provides excellent preparation for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination. Students interested in corporate or tax law may also wish to pursue an accounting major.

To earn the BSM degree with a transcript designation as an accounting major, complete the following courses:

General liberal arts and sciences requirements (approximately 44 hours)

Freeman prerequisites (a minimum of 18 hours):
ACCT 203 - Financial Accounting

MATH 115, 121, or 131 - Calculus

MATH 111, 114, or ECON 323 - Statistics
ECON 101 or 103 - Microeconomics
ECON 102 or 104 - Macroeconomics

PSYC 100, 101, or 102 - Psychology

Freeman core curriculum (27 hours):
ACCT 301 - Managerial Accounting
ISDS 375 - Business Computing
MKTG 382 - Marketing Management
PERS 321 - Managerial Perspectives
FINC 352 - Financial Management
MCOM 335 - Management Communications
OBHR 331 - Organizational Behavior
PSOM 372 - Operations Management
GMGT 415 - Management Policy

Accounting major required courses (6 hours):
ACCT 303 - Intermediate Financial Accounting I
ACCT 403 - Intermediate Financial Accounting II

Three of the following accounting major courses (9 hours):
ACCT 402 - Auditing
ACCT 404 - Advanced Financial Accounting+
ACCT 407 - Advanced Managerial Accounting+
ACCT 409 - Accounting Information Systems
ACCT 470/471 - Equity Analysis/Burkenroad Reports
ACCT 472 - Financial Statement Fraud
ACCT 473 - Competing for Customers & Capital
TAXN 425 - Business Taxation

+One of the three courses must be either ACCT 404 or ACCT 407.

One non-business elective [200 level or higher] (3 hours)

Two non-business or business electives [300 level or higher] (6 hours)

and any three business electives (9 hours)

Total: 122 hours
