Entergy-Tulane Institute

Tulane University with funding from Entergy Corporation formed a center to explore issues related to energy and environmental education. The Entergy-Tulane Energy Institute was founded in 2003 to establish a systematic research program aimed at improving the understanding of the integration of energy markets, policy, technology, and the environment. In a joint effort by the School of Sciences and Engineering and the A. B. Freeman School of Business, the Energy Institute was created and charged with developing courses in the area and conducting research that would be useful to the energy industry.

Given the importance of the energy industry on a global scale, the deregulation of portions of the electric and natural gas industries in the United States, and major energy and environmental challenges facing our Nation and region, the establishment of the Energy Institute was timely in terms of its potential positive impact on the industry, the Gulf South region, and the State of Louisiana. Because of the energy industry's critical importance, Tulane made a strategic decision to expand its educational and research programs that serve the energy industry and related sectors preparing students for careers in the energy industry.

The technological centerpiece is the Trading Center, a $2.5 million electronic trading room equipped with industry-leading simulation, trading and financial software from FEA, Oracle, Reuters and Trading Technologies. The Trading Center acts as a hands-on laboratory for the teaching of energy, risk management, equities and options.

Trading Classroom

The creation of the Energy Institute provides increased focus, funding, and an organizational framework for Tulane's energy-related initiatives. These initiatives include industry partnerships, education programming in energy finance, analysis, and risk management, ability to conduct and publish applied research, and the development of a skilled pool of employee talent to work in the industry, as well as for related financial institutions.
