Ph.D. Program in Business Studies for Faculty of Selected Latin American Business Schools

Program Administration

This PhD program will be administered by a committee consisting of five members of the graduate faculty of Tulane University, as directed by the Graduate School of Tulane University. Committee members will be selected from the disciplinary areas included in the course curriculum (accounting, statistics, economics, finance, organizational behavior, psychology, sociology, and management).

Program Delivery

Courses taught by Tulane faculty in Caracas, Venezuela:
Classes will meet at the facilities of IESA on Friday and Saturday on four different weekends during each of the fall or spring semesters. Contact time will be 4 - 5 hours each day for each course. Two courses will be offered each semester and these courses will meet on the same weekend (see the attached program calendar).

Summer Residency at Tulane:
Students must spend four summers in residence at Tulane during which organized courses will be offered and faculty supervision will be provided. During the summer semester at Tulane, courses would be taught during the months of June and July for eight weeks. Participants would normally take two classes with each class meeting twice weekly for 2.5 hours each meeting (see the attached program calendar).

Students are required to cover all travel and living expenses associated with their stay in New Orleans. Tulane will assist in finding housing and arranging activities for families who visit.

Waiver Policy:
All courses listed for each concentration must be taken by all participants in the program.

Interim Masters Degree:
Students completing 36 hours of coursework toward completion of the PhD program will be eligible to earn a Masters of Management degree. This degree program offers concentrations in finance and management depending upon the PhD track selected by the recipient.

Recommendations for teaching load for faculty participants during their tenure in the PhD program
During the first three years of the program, we recommend that participants have a teaching load of no more than two courses per semester. In the fourth year or fifth year of the program, we recommend that participating faculty take sabbatical leave of at least one semester to work on their dissertation. In the case where a participant is not eligible for sabbatical leave, we recommend that they be given reduced teaching and service responsibilities to work on the dissertation.
