Latin America - Faculty Development

ITESM PhD  | U de Los Andes PhD  | Tulane-IESA Ph.D. | LA Doctoral Consortium

Ph.D. Program in Business Studies for Faculty of Selected Latin American Business Schools
The A. B. Freeman School of Business of Tulane will offer a PhD program for faculty of selected Latin American business schools beginning in January 1999. This project is a faculty development program which provides eligible faculty the opportunity to earn a PhD degree from the Graduate School of Tulane University. The goal of the PhD program is to provide experienced faculty with the research skills and in-depth knowledge to prepare them for enhanced careers in teaching and scholarly research in an area of concentration in business. The program will accommodate a maximum of 30 faculty from one or more participating institutions.

This PhD program will be taught by Tulane faculty and courses will be offered at the facilities of IESA in Caracas, Venezuela during the period September through May and at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana during a residency period of June and July each year. The program is a five year project divided into 15 semesters including each summer as a semester. The curriculum is comprised of 16 courses in each area of concentration, followed by comprehensive exams, and a dissertation. Two courses will be taken each semester for the first eight semesters (2 2 years). The remaining 7 semesters (2 2 years) are dedicated to comprehensive exams and the completion of the dissertation. Upon the completion of 12 courses, participants will receive a Master of Management degree.

The PhD curriculum is a custom designed program allowing concentrations in management, finance and marketing. It is modeled closely after the two track PhD curriculum offered at Tulane University through the A. B. Freeman School of Business. It is comprised of a common core of eight courses covering quantitative analysis and research methodology, and the theory and management of organizations. Beyond the common core, students elect to pursue a concentration in management or finance and take eight additional courses in one of these areas. A set of marketing electives offers the students in the management track the option of specialization in marketing as they approach the dissertation stage of the program.

Upon completion of the coursework, students will take comprehensive exams and prepare a dissertation prospectus. The dissertation phase of the curriculum requires the student to demonstrate their ability to conduct original research in their area of concentration.
