Categories of Library Patrons

Tulane Alumni
Tulane alumni may request an Alumni card, which enables alumni to borrow books from the library.  There is a $50 annual fee for an Alumni card.  The subscriber card will be valid for a period of 12 months from the date of subscription. Turchin Library Subscribers are permitted to have a maximum of five books checked out at one time, and are entitled to check out circulating books for a period of two weeks. Subscribers are entitled to one 2 week renewal period. However, renewals will not be placed on materials in which another patron has requested use. The library furthermore reserves the right to recall library material requested by another patron. Subscribers do not have access to the licensed electronic databases, or to interlibrary loan services.  To become an official Tulane alumnus, please contact the Tulane Alumni Office at 504-865-5901, or via email at alumni@tulane.edu.  Present the Alumni card at the Howard-Tilton Library Circulation Desk to receive a library card.

Howard-Tilton Subscribers
Anyone may purchase a Subscriber Card, which entitles patrons not affiliated with Tulane to borrow books from the library.  Howard-Tilton Subscribers are treated as Tulane Alumni Subscribers. They are permitted to have a maximum of five books checked out at one time, and are entitled to check out circulating books for a period of two weeks. Subscribers are entitled to one 2 week renewal period. However, renewals will not be placed on materials in which another patron has requested use. The library furthermore reserves the right to recall library material requested by another patron. Subscribers do not have access to the licensed electronic databases, or to interlibrary loan services.  There is a $250.00 annual fee for a Subscriber card.  Cards cannot be renewed until all outstanding fines are paid.  Please call the Howard-Tilton Library Circulation Desk at 504-865-5901 for further information.

Circulating Materials
Circulation Process
All patron categories are required to follow the following procedure in checking out library material.

  • The patron must present a valid Tulane ID when checking out material.
    • Tulane Students, Faculty, Staff - Tulane ID card.
    • Tulane Alumni - must have alumni card from Tulane Alumni Office.
    • Howard-Tilton Subscribers - subscriber card.

Renewals
The renewal period is dependent on the category of patron. (See Library Patron section for details.) The material can be renewed in person at the Turchin Library Service Desk or online via the Library Online Catalog.

Fines
The Turchin Library does not fine for past due materials. However, in the event the library places a recall on material, and the material is not returned within the designated time period, the patron will be charged $1.00 fine per day until the material is returned. All circulating material is subject to recall after a period of 10 days.

Lost Materials
In the event the patron loses an item checked out to him/her, the patron is responsible for the replacement cost of the book, a standard fee of $49.00, plus a $15.00 handling fee.

Destruction of Materials
In the event a library patron defaces or destroys library material, he/she will be responsible for the replacement value of the material plus a $15.00 handling fee. This fee applies whether the material has been checked out, or is being used in the library.

Interlibrary Loans Past Due

Even though the Turchin Library may have a lenient fine policy, those libraries from whom we receive interlibrary loans, may not. It is therefore essential that all interlibrary loans be returned when due. If the Turchin Library is fined for delinquent interlibrary loans, the library reserves the right to pass this cost on to the patron.
